Castle of Lekursi
Castle of Lëkursi is a XVI century structure which was built in the old village of Lëkursi. It is an important tourist attraction site nowadays. The place has been converted into a luxurious and attractive bar and restaurant that attracts countless visitors and holiday-makers... Historians believe the castle was built around 1537, when Sultan Sulejman attacked the island of Corfu and saw it necessary to control Saranda harbour and the Saranda-Butrint road stretch.
The castle is located on top of a high and dominating hill, surrounded by the ruins of the old village. It has an important strategic position, overlooking the city of Saranda and the nearby roads. It also offers a spectacular panorama of the small islands of Ksamil. The castle has a square form with two round turrets on the NW and SE of the castle. It is easy to gather from its layout and position that the castle was built with the aim of observation of the nearby area and sea. The hight of the castle walls is about 6-7m and their thickness is about 2m.
Nowadays, there is a lovely and luxurious bar and restaurant with old stone architecture offering excellent service. It is one of the most popular and most attractive tourist sights in the city. A must-visit for all the city visitors. Â
